How to Rename Lightroom Photos?

Adobe Lightroom, most commonly known as Lightroom, is a popular photo processing and organizing application. Today, it boasts millions of users worldwide who edit and store photos. Since new pictures are uploaded and edited almost every day, it’s important to keep photos well-organized. The best way to do that is by renaming them, making it easier to remember their location for future needs. Unfortunately, not many people are aware of how to rename Lightroom photos. But don’t worry—we’ve got you covered!

Renaming on Import

The first method of renaming Lightroom photos is during the import process. When files are being imported, look for the Renaming tab on the right side of the Import dialog box. The advantage of this method is that you can rename photos immediately and eliminate the generic names generated by cameras or other devices, such as IMG_1234.

  1. Click the File Renaming option.
  2. You’ll be presented with multiple renaming options.
  3. If you want to create a custom name, select Edit at the bottom of the drop-down menu.
  4. A new window will open, allowing you to fully customize the renaming preset.
  5. Scroll down for additional options to create the desired title.
  6. Click Insert on the right of each option.
  7. Finally, click Save Current Settings as New Preset, give your preset a name, and hit Create.

Renaming Favorite Files

This method is particularly useful for photographers who take hundreds of photos daily and need to keep them well-organized.

  1. Enable Library Mode in Lightroom.
  2. Select the photos you want to rename.
  3. Press F2 or choose Rename Photos from the Library drop-down menu.
  4. A new Rename dialog box will open with several renaming options.
  5. Use the Custom Name Sequence to give a precise title to the images.
  6. If you want to rename and keep photos in sequence, this is the best method.

Renaming on Export

Another way to rename photos in Lightroom is during the export process. If you share photos on social media or use them for professional work, this method is ideal.

  1. Select the photos you want to export.
  2. Scroll down to the section that provides the renaming option.
  3. Click the option next to Rename To, and Lightroom will present several renaming choices.
