Path of Exile is an online action game which lets you indulge in a medieval fantasy world.
Due to its free-to-play pricing model and modern high-end graphics, it has been gaining popularity ever since its first release. The game has undergone a tremendous amount of fixing and polishing in the past few years, and thus it’s safe to say that the chances of a bug affecting gameplay are extremely low. However, certain circumstances and network issues may cause the game to lag, and this is exactly what we will try to address in the lines below.

Solutions
Solution 1: Update The Game Through Steam
Updating any game, or for that matter, any software is always a good idea with regards to fixing any bugs. This is due to the fact that developers do release updates that take into account all the patches/ corrections that have been applied after taking into account user feedback. Therefore, use the following guide on Steam to fetch the latest updates.
Turn On Automatic Updates
- In Steam client, locate the Library tab and switch to it.
- Locate Path of Exile from the list of installed games. Once you’ve located it, right-click it and select Properties.
- Now look for the UPDATES tab in the just opened Properties window. Select Always keep this game up to date from the Automatic updates section.
- Close all the opened windows. Also, make sure in the Library tab under the game’s name, it states Auto-Updates Enabled so that the game will automatically install the latest releases to your local machine.
Use The Old Fashion Manual Update
- Open the Steam client and switch to the LIBRARY tab located on the top of its window.
- Look for Path of Exile game among the list of installed games. If there is a new update available for it, the client will automatically display the Update Required message right next to the game.
- Click on the arrow icon right under the Update Required message. Next, from the opened dialog box, select DOWNLOAD THE UPDATE to initiate the update process.
Solution 2: Lower the Settings
When your computer system’s hardware isn’t powerful enough to execute the game, no matter how long you try to optimize the system’s resources, the game won’t run in most cases. The reason behind this is in order for the game to be able to function properly with a smooth frame rate with low response time, both the hardware and software should be well equipped of handling the workload. If there aren’t adequate hardware resources, follow these steps to turn the settings of the game on the lower side (at the cost of its visual performance) and check if that helps.
- Locate the File Explorer / Windows Explorer as seen in the following screenshot and then open it.
- Select Documents from the Navigation Pane located on the left-hand side of the screen.
- Now type out the following address in the Address bar of the File Explorer / Windows Explorer and press Enter to access the folder where the game settings are stored:
%userprofile%\Documents\my games\Path of Exile - Locate the file named production_config.ini and then right-click it. Now select Edit from the context menu.
- Press Ctrl + F to open the Find menu.
- Type in display in the Find what textbox and press Enter to search for it.
- The settings under the highlighted search result should look like this.
- Replace them with the below given settings.
- Save the file and close it.
Solution 3: Upgrade The Current Internet Connection
Since Path of Exile is an online game, it requires a high-speed internet connection that is stable for a smooth gaming experience. Using an internet connection that isn’t sufficient to cope with the game’s requirements may also lead to poor performance, lag, stuttering and packet loss. Use the following guide to figure out whether your existing internet connection is suitable enough or you need to upgrade/ replace it.
Use a Speed test / Ping test
- Visit www.speedtest.net
- Click on BEGIN TEST to initiate the probe into the connection speed.
- Check the PING value. If it’s anywhere less than 50 ms then the connection is fine.
- Another useful tip is to perform the speed test with servers in locations such as Amsterdam, California, Frankfurt, London, Texas, Washington D.C. as the Path of Exile’s servers are located at these places. When the PING value for these locations will be under 500 ms latency, it means the connection is perfect for playing online video games. Usually, 3G / HSPA connections aren’t recommended for multiplayer games, as their connectivity is determined by the weather conditions. Thus ADSL or Fiber Optic connections are highly recommended in such cases due to higher stability and speed.
