Recently, Internet forums have been flooded with questions related to OneDrive’s problem loading the folders. A lot of people are facing issues viewing the list of folders in their drive. In this tutorial, we’ll discuss resolutions to address this issue. Let’s begin.
Method 1: Sign-out & Sign-in
Sometimes, a technical glitch causes a problem displaying your folders list in OneDrive. You can prevent the issue from occurring again by signing out from your OneDrive account and signing in it again. The steps are as follows:
- Click on the OneDrive icon in the Notification Area of your Taskbar.
- Click on Help & Settings.
- Select Settings from the menu options.
- In the new dialog, click on the Account tab.
- Select Unlink this PC.
- Restart your computer.
- Open the OneDrive icon and sign in to your account.
Note: If you have the 2-Step Authentication security feature enabled, it may require you to verify your identity by providing the One-Time Password (OTP) sent to your registered mobile.
Method 2: Update Microsoft OneDrive
If you do not regularly update OneDrive, some potential compatibility issues could break its functioning. Update OneDrive to the latest version to see if that helps with your error.
- Click on Start, and type Microsoft Store.
- Open Microsoft Store from the search results.
- Click on the Menu icon on the top right corner (three dots).
- Select Download and updates, followed by the Get Updates button.
- The download and installation may take some time depending on your Internet connection speed.
Method 3: Run Windows Store Troubleshooter
Another workaround that helped many people is running the Windows Store Troubleshooter.
- Click on Start, select Settings.
- Click on the Update & Security icon.
- Click on the Troubleshoot tab.
- Windows will display a message stating no recommended troubleshooters right now.
- Click on Additional troubleshooters.
- You’ll see a list of all troubleshooters. Scroll down to the bottom until you find Windows Store Apps Troubleshooter and open it.
- Make sure to choose the Run as Administrator option when running the troubleshooter. Doing so will enable Windows to apply the diagnostic solutions and make changes.
Method 4: Reinstall OneDrive
There may be problems with the OneDrive’s program files. Uninstalling and reinstalling OneDrive might help to fix those issues.
Windows 10:
- Click on Start, select Settings.
- Click on Apps.
- In the Apps & Features, select Microsoft OneDrive and click on the Uninstall button.
- Follow the removal instructions and then restart your computer.
- Once your computer is restarted, visit the Microsoft Download Center and reinstall OneDrive again.
Windows 8.1/ 8:
- If you’re using Windows 8, press the Windows Key on your keyboard, or move your mouse cursor at the bottom left corner of the screen. If you’re using Windows 8.1, simply click on the Start button.
- Select the OneDrive application from the list, and click on the Uninstall icon at the bottom.
- Windows will open the Programs and Features dialog and automatically highlight OneDrive.
- Click on Uninstall/ Change button, and follow the on-screen instructions.
Windows 7:
- Click on Start.
- Select Control Panel.
- Click on Uninstall a Program under the Programs category.
- Select Microsoft OneDrive, and then click on Uninstall.
Method 5: Lower your Download Rate
If you’re running low on bandwidth, especially on a slow Internet connection, you may want to lower your download rate.
- Open the OneDrive Settings dialog.
- In the Upload Rate, select Limit to, and set it to 125 KB/s.
- In the Download Rate, select Limit to, and set it to 125 KB/s.
Method 6: Free Up Space
OneDrive requires adequate disk space to function correctly. Make sure your computer doesn’t run into a low disk space issue and has adequate storage space.
You can free up your HDD storage as shown under:
1. Using Disk CleanUp:
Disk CleanUp is an in-house tool in Windows that analyzes your disk space and helps you remove temporary, junk files. Regularly deleting temporary, junk files will make your system run faster and stable.
- Type Disk Cleanup in the Search Box on your Taskbar.
- Open Disk CleanUp from the Search Results.
- Select the drive where OneDrive is installed, preferably drive C:\
- Click on OK.
- Check up all the boxes on your screen, and click on OK.
- Wait for some time till Windows performs a clean-up.
2. Unsyncing Unneeded Folders
While signing in to OneDrive, if you’ve previously synced a lot of folders offline, it impacts your hard disk storage. Unsync all the non-required folders to free up your space.
- Open the OneDrive folder from the File Explorer (or Windows Explorer in previous versions).
- Right-click an offline synced folder, select Free up space.
- Windows will delete the local copies of that folder from your hard disk. No online files will remain untouched.
Note: You can access the folder contents again by simply double-clicking any file. Each time you double-click a file, OneDrive will download that file.
Method 6: Remove Windows Anniversary Update
Have you been facing this issue after upgrading to Windows 10 Anniversary Update? Many users reported Windows Anniversary Update caused problems with the OneDrive and it stopped working normally. You can uninstall Windows 10 Anniversary Update as follows:
- Click on Start, select Settings.
- Click on Update & Security.
- Select Recovery.
- Select Get Started under Go back to an earlier build category.
- Specify a reason, and then hit Next.
- Follow the on-screen instructions.
Note: Before starting this process, make sure to save and close any open documents. You’ll need to reinstall all the programs again. You’ll also lose any changes you’ve made to the PC settings after installing the Windows 10 Anniversary Update.
