Optimize Startup
Disabling unnecessary startup items will lead to a much faster and smoother bootup for your Windows 10 PC. Here is how you do it:
- Type Task Manager in the Search Box.
- Open it from Search Results.
- Click the Startup tab after expanding the User Interface.
- One by one disable every startup item.
Optimize Services
Use the Services tool to cut down non-essential background processes and services. You can use the Extreme Performance Feature of RegInOut System Utilities to turn off high-nuisance services for a while and let your computer feel light and run fast.
- Type services.msc in the Search Box.
- Open the Services tool from Search Results.
- Sort the services by Startup Type.
- One by one right-click a non-essential service and choose the Stop option.
Optimize Drives
The OS and other installed apps write data to the hard disk. Drive optimization is all about rearranging this information in such a way that increases the process of data retrieval.
- Type Defrag in the Search Box and open Defragment and Optimize Drives from Search Results.
- Select all drives from the list box and then click Optimize all.
- This process may take from few to may take several hours. It all depends on the level of fragmentation, the storage capacity of HD as well as the amount of disk space used.
Note: Keeping other programs closed during this process is strongly recommended. Programs constantly create and modify temporary files that result in fragmentation. Avoid unwanted disk activities till the defragmentation process is successfully concluded.
Increase Virtual Memory
Virtual Memory is extremely useful to improve your computer’s boot-time performance. It uses the SWAP file whenever your computer goes low on RAM memory. It’s a kind of a virtual memory as it makes an illusion of a memory that’s not actually available physically.
- Press Windows Key + R. This opens up the Run dialog box.
- Type control sysdm.cpl and click OK.
- Click the Advanced tab, and then the Settings button under Performance category.
- Now click the Advanced tab in another dialog named Performance Options.
- Click Change button under Virtual Memory category.
- Make sure the Automatically manage paging file size for all drives checkbox is unchecked.
- Select a drive to increase virtual memory, choose Custom size option and then specify a higher Paging File size.
- Click Set. Now click OK thrice.
- A system reboot is mandatory to make the changes.
Disable Indexing
If you rarely use the Windows Search feature, it’s worth disabling the drive indexing service as it significantly improves your computer’s performance.
- Type Indexing Options in the Search Box and open it.
- Click the modify button.
- Make sure all locations are visible in Indexed Locations dialog. To do so, click the Show all locations button.
- Check all the drives from the Change selected locations list box.
- Click OK | Close.
Disable Visual Effects
Disabling visual effects is another trick that helps to speed up your laptop. The vast majority of visual effects consume higher RAM and thereby affect the PC performance.
- Type RegEdit keyword in the Search Box and open it from the search results.
- Locate the following subkey:
- HKEY_CURRENT_USER | Software | Microsoft | Windows | CurrentVersion | Explorer | VisualEffects
- Double click the VisualFXSetting string; replace it with 2.
- Press Enter.
- Exit and then reboot.
Delete All Restore Points
Many PC users are not aware of tens of GBs of storage space occupied by System Restore Points. Old restore points aren’t needed in most cases and can be safely deleted. The newer ones you created prior to performing various administrative tasks like installing apps, Windows Update, change in major system settings etc can be used later if needed.
- Type Create a restore point in the Search Box, and open it.
- In the new dialog that opens, click the Configure button.
- Click Delete | OK.
