For those who want to connect to the Internet, Windows 10 has an inbuilt PPPoE wizard that can be used to dial up to connect to the Internet. This is quite useful for those who have either a modem or router in bridge mode as they need a PPPoE dialer to connect to the Internet.
The Error Message
Your Windows 10 can be dented with this “Error 651: The modem (or another connecting device) has reported an error.” It can impede your connectivity to the online world.
Why does it happen?
Following are the reasons you are facing this trouble:
- Incorrect driver installed in Windows 10
- Issues in PPPoE files
Solutions
Solution 1
First, make sure your Internet line is working properly. If you have an external router or a modem, the working condition can be checked by observing the status of lights displayed on it.
Device
Steady green light indicates the line is working. Both DSL/Internet lights should be steady. (from left, second and third bulbs).
ADSL/DSL Modem
Steady green light indicates the line is working. Both DSL/Internet bulbs should be steady (same as above image).
3G/4G Modem
Blinking bulb indicates the connection isn’t established. Steady bulb indicates the connection is established. Usually steady green is GPRS, Blue is 3G and cyan is HSPA or HSPA+ depend on the modem.
Solution 2
Instead of upgrading from the previous version of Windows, try a fresh installation. Fresh installation can solve a lot of driver system file issues. But make sure your important documents are backed up in an external location as fresh installation needs a drive format.
- First option is for upgrading old Windows version to latest Windows.
- Second option is for making a fresh installation.
Solution 3
Install the latest drivers for LAN Port /Modem. If you have a router, download the LAN Port driver and install it. If you have a modem, download the modem driver and install it.
For Modems
If you are not sure which modem you have then:
Start -> Search for “devices and printers”. There you can see all devices attached to your computer.
Search the device name and the model in Google. Visit its official website and download the driver. Make sure you select the right operating system before downloading.
For Routers in Bridged Mode/LAN Ports
If you have a router, it won’t show any device in above location as the router works through the LAN Port. Usually, the LAN ports come along with the motherboard. If you are not sure what is your LAN Port, first find the motherboard you have. Usually, the LAN port driver can be downloaded from the motherboard official website.
Start -> cmd -> type
wmic baseboard get product,Manufacturer,version,serialnumber
And press Enter on your keyboard. It will show the motherboard you owned.
Search the motherboard product name on Google and go to its website to download the LAN Driver for the LAN Port on the motherboard. Make sure you select the correct operating system before downloading.
Solution 4
Repair the system files in Windows. Windows can repair its system files to make sure the corrupted system files are not present in the system. Usually, the Error 651 in Windows 10 can happen due to corrupted rasppoe system file. Rasppoe file can be downloaded from the Internet but it’s not recommended as it may contain malware. It’s always better to repair the system.
Windows 10 system files can be repaired as following.
Start -> cmd -> right click and select “Run as Administrator” -> type
sfc /scannow
And Enter.
It will scan the whole system files and repair if there are corrupted system files.
Solution 5
Uninstall the Internet security guard installed in the Windows 10 and see whether the Error 651 is resolved or not. If the Error is resolved either update the Internet security guard or use something else.
