A Required Privilege Is Not Held By The Client Windows 7

Change Drive Security

A file stored on your hard disk does not have sufficient security privileges in order to be processed by Windows or an installed program. Provide security privileges to the concerning drive to fix a required privilege is not held by the client Windows 7.

  • Double click my Computer desktop icon.
  • Right click the drive to which you would like to allow security privileges.
  • Select Properties from the context menu.
  • Click the Security tab.
  • Select your user name under "Group or user names" category.
  • Click Edit button.
  • Provide full control, modify, read/ write, list folder contents and other permissions to all items under "permissions and authenticated users" category.
  • Click OK | OK.

Change User Account Type to Administrator

The current user account may not have enough security privileges. If you’re running a standard user account, change its type to administrator.
Usually, standard user accounts do not have enough permission to change important system settings and process system files. Contrary to that, administrator account has access to every system settings, files and features.

  • Press the Windows Key.
  • Type "User accounts" in the Search Box.
  • Click "Change your account type" link.
  • Select "Administrator" option and then click "Change account type" button.

Allow Security Permissions to Registry Modifications

It is also possible that your operating system does not adequate permissions to access/ modify the Registry entries. Change security permissions through Registry Editor.

  • Press Windows Key.
  • Type “RegEdit” in the Search Box.
  • Open it from the Search Results.
  • Expand “Computer” from the left hand side tree control.
  • Right click “HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT” Registry hive and select “Permissions”.
  • In the new dialog provide read, special permissions and full control.
  • Click Apply | OK.
  • Provide required permissions to following Registry hives through the same method:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, HKEY_USERS and HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG
  • Close Registry Editor.

Disable User Account Control

As the name describes, User Account Control is a security features which allows users to perform administrative tasks without having to switch user accounts. It has many benefits; however sometime it may cause a required privilege is not held by the client Windows 7 error message. In such case, temporarily disable its notifications and check whether the problem still persists.

  • Press the Windows Key
  • Type "Change user account control settings" in the Search Box.
  • Open it from the Search Results page.
  • Drag the slider to bottom to select "Never notify" option.
  • Click OK and then restart your system for the changes to take effects.
