Chrome Runs Slow | Make Chrome Faster in Windows 8/8.1, Windows 7, Vista

Magically Get Rid of Excessive RAM Usage for Chrome

The reason why I said “magically” get rid of excessive RAM usage is that this is a hidden feature in Google Chrome. There is very little information about its usage on the Internet. This feature can be used to prevent excessive RAM usage and thus speed up Google Chrome in WIndows 7, Windows 8/8.1.

  • Right click Google Chrome desktop icon.
  • Select Properties.
  • Click the Shortcut tab.
  • Under Target textbox, add the following command at the end of the existing value:
    --purge-memory-button
    (Example: “C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe” –purge-memory-button)
  • Click Apply | OK.
  • Now double click Google Chrome desktop icon to open it. While it is being loaded, press Shift + Esc keys simultaneously.
  • You’ll get Task Manager dialog. Remember one thing that it’ll display a hidden button, i.e. “Purge Memory”. Usually we don’t see this button unless we perform above steps.
  • Click that button “Purge Memory” to magically get rid of excessive RAM usage.

Disable Predicting Network Actions

As the name describes, this feature is related with the network actions. Many times this feature results in excessive delays and slowdown in the performance. Disable this feature if your Chrome runs slow in Windows 8/8.1 or Windows 7.

  • Click Wrench icon on top right side.
  • Select Settings.
  • Scroll down the page and click “Show advanced settings” link.
  • Scroll down again till you see “Privacy” category.
  • Uncheck the box labelled “Predict network actions to improve page load performance”.
  • Close and re-open the browser.

Run Chrome without Loading Plug-Ins

Google Chrome usually runs with plenty of plug-ins. These plug-ins take more time to load and freezes your browser. Disable all plugins, or at least most of them, in order to prevent this issue.

  • In the Google Chrome address bar type “about:plugins”.
  • Press ENTER key.
  • You’ll see list of couple of plug-ins.
  • Disable all the plug-ins.

There is also an uninstall icon at the right corner of Enable checkbox. Simply click it to remove relevant plug-in.

Uninstall Third Party Toolbars

Toolbars are browser components. Nowadays many websites offer third party toolbars in order to avail different features and access to their content. Uninstall third party toolbars as below:

  • Right click a third party toolbar you installed, say capture & annotate toolbars.
  • Select “Uninstall” option.

Check for Latest Version

Download latest version from official website and install it on your PC.

  • Click the Wrench icon.
  • Select “About Google Chrome”
  • Update it from the “About” page.
