Turn Off Windows Features

This is a set of different Windows features which are installed during Windows installation. Many of them are no way useful to a home/ personal user. Review list of features and turn off all unnecessary ones.

 
  • Click the Start button.
  • Click Control Panel.
  • Click Programs | Turn Windows Features On or Off (Under Programs and Features category).
  • A new dialog box will open named Windows Features.
  • Uncheck check-boxes of all the features that you would like to remove.
  • Click OK to proceed.
 

Note: Please note that if you change your mind and reinstall these features at a later time, you will need Windows installation disc. If you do not have the Windows installation disc and you’re not sure about the features, better keep them as they are.

Optimize Power Settings in Favour of Performance

Basically power settings are concerned with idle time and how your computer responds in different circumstances. Optimize your computer’s power settings if your Windows 7 is not responding properly.

 
  • Click Start | Control Panel.
  • Click System and Security | Power Options.
  • You’ll see your current power plan selected. Select “Balanced” plan and then click “Change plan settings” link.
  • Click “Restore default settings for this plan” link. Click Yes button.
  • Click “Change advanced power settings” link.
  • A new dialog opens. Select “High performance” from the drop down box.
  • Click “Restore plan defaults” button.
  • Click Apply | OK | OK.

Enable ReadyBoost

ReadyBoost is a technology that uses your USB Flash Drive to temporarily store files if the hard disk has insufficient disk space. This will speed up system performance and resolve Windows 7 not responding problem.

 

A USB Drive should have at least:

  • 256 MB storage capacity
  • Speed of 2.5 MB/ second

Process:

  • Connect a USB Drive to your computer.
  • Double click My Computer desktop icon.
  • Right click USB Drive icon in My Computer.
  • Select Properties.
  • Click the ReadyBoost tab.
  • Select “Use this device”.
  • Specify an amount in MB.
  • Click Apply | OK.
