Reinstall DirectX via DXSetup.exe

A file called DXSetup.exe is stored on your hard disk which can be used to reinstall the same version of Microsoft DirectX. Your existing version can be corrupt. Reinstalling it will repair the problem.

For Windows 8.1/ Windows 8 and Earlier Versions:

  • Double click My Computer desktop icon.
  • Open the following folder:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\Common\Call of Duty Ghosts\DirectX
    Or
    C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\Common\Call of Duty Ghosts\DirectX
  • You’ll find a sub folder named with DirectX version. Double click it.
  • Right click “DXSetup.exe” file, select “Run as administrator”.
  • Follow the on-screen wizard to reinstall Microsoft DirectX.

Disable Extending Monitor Display

Are you using multiple monitors? Having multiple monitors is not a problem at all; however a display extending feature might be unsupported. Set a primary monitor to disable this feature.

For Windows 8.1/ Windows 8:

  • Press Windows Key + X.
  • Click Control Panel.
  • Click Appearance and Personalization | Display.
  • Click “Adjust resolution” link on the left side panel.
  • In “Multiple Displays” drop down box make sure that “Extend these displays” option is not selected. Select any other option, for example, “Show desktop only on 1”, “Show desktop only on 2” or “Duplicate these displays”.
  • Click Apply | OK.

Note: “Multiple displays” drop down box will be invisible for those users who do not have a second monitor plugged-in. In other words, only primary monitor is plugged-in. Even if you have a second monitor, it must be recognized in order to display this drop down box.

For Earlier Versions of Windows:

Click Start | Control Panel.
Other steps remain the same.

Identify Display

DirectX encountered an unrecoverable error occurs when one or more monitors connected to the computer are not properly identified. Re-identify the monitors as below:

For Windows 8.1/ Windows 8 and Earlier Versions:

  • Open Control Panel. (Follow Step 1-4 from the “Disable Extending Monitor Display” paragraph)
  • Click “Identify” button.
  • You’ll see a large number on each monitor plugged-in to your computer/ laptop.
  • Click monitor icons, drag them to appropriate positions.
  • Click Apply | OK.

Change Game Compatibility Settings

The game you’re trying to run might have compatibility problems. Run it after configuring your compatibility settings.

For Windows 8.1/ Windows 8 and Earlier Versions:

  • Right click game’s desktop shortcut, select Properties.
  • In the Shortcut Properties dialog box click the Compatibility tab.
  • Check-up the box labelled “Run this program in compatibility mode for”.
  • Choose an earlier version of Windows from the drop down box, and then click Apply | OK.

Reinstall Graphics Media Accelerator

DirectX encountered an unrecoverable error appears due to corrupt graphics media accelerator files. Uninstall and reinstall it as follows:

For Windows 8.1/ Windows 8:

  • Press Windows Key + X.
  • Click “Programs and Features”.
  • Right click Intel Graphics Media Accelerator or NVIDIA Display Driver; or any other driver.
  • Select “Uninstall” option.
  • Follow the uninstaller wizard, reboot when you’re finished.
  • Download the latest driver version online and install it on your PC.

For Earlier Versions of Windows:

  • Click Start, select Control Panel.
  • Click Programs | Uninstall a Program.

Other steps remain the same.

Troubleshoot Display Quality Problems

Diagnose problems with your computer’s display settings. Windows has a troubleshooter utility which identifies and repairs the settings.

For Windows 8.1/ Windows 8 and Earlier Versions:

  • Open Control Panel. (Follow Step 1-4 from the “Disable Extending Monitor Display” paragraph)
  • Type following in the Control Panel location indicator box at top, and press ENTER:
    Control Panel\All Control Panel Items
  • Click “Troubleshooting” icon.
  • Click Hardware and Sound | Hardware and Devices.
  • A new wizard will open. From the welcome page click “Advanced” link and then check-up the box named “Apply repairs automatically”.
  • Click Next and follow the wizard.

Enable DirectDraw and Other Acceleration Features

These settings are found in the Microsoft DirectX dialog. If these settings are disabled, enable them as shown under:

For Windows 8.1/ Windows 8:

  • Press Windows Key + X.
  • Select “Run”.
  • Type “DxDiag” in the Open textbox, click OK.
  • Click the Display tab.
  • Enable all the features including AGP Texture Acceleration, DirectDraw Acceleration and Direct3D Acceleration.
  • Click Exit button.

For Earlier Versions of Windows:

Press Windows Key + R to open the Run dialog. Other steps remain the same.

Update Microsoft DirectX

Sometimes updates contain patches that resolve internal errors. Update Microsoft DirectX to its latest version.

For Windows 8.1/ Windows 8 and Earlier Versions:

  • Open Programs and Features. (Follow Steps 1-2 from “Reinstall Graphics Media Accelerator”)
  • Right click Microsoft DirectX, select “Uninstall” option.
  • Follow the wizard, reboot.
  • Download a fresh version of DirectX from here.
  • Double click the setup wizard, install the program on your computer.

Disable Remote Desktop Sharing

Your computer does not support remote desktop sharing feature. Disable it as follows:

For Windows 8.1/ Windows 8 and Earlier Versions:

  • Open Microsoft NetMeeting.
  • Click the Tools menu, and then select Remote desktop sharing.
  • Uncheck the box named “Enable remote desktop sharing on this computer”.
  • Click OK.
  • Exit NetMeeting.

Disable Writing Combining (For Windows XP Users Only)

DirectX encountered an unrecoverable error due to writing combining feature. If you’re using Windows XP disable it.

For Windows XP Only:

  • Click the Start button on your Taskbar.
  • Click Control Panel.
  • Double click Display.
  • In the new dialog click Settings tab, and then Advanced | Troubleshooting tab.
  • Uncheck the box named “Enable write combining”.
  • Click OK twice.
