Check Minimum System Requirements

Make sure your computer fulfils the minimum system requirements specified on Microsoft’s official website. Here are the minimum system requirements for Movie Maker:

 
  • Operating System: Windows 7/ Vista SP 2 (32/ 64 bit)
  • RAM: 1 GB (In case of HD video editing, at least 2 GB)
  • Video Card: Whichever that supports DirectX 9 and Pixel Shader 2
  • Software: Internet Explorer 7, Firefox 3 or Safari 3.1 (Any of these browsers)
  • Other: A CD/ DVD Drive, dial-up or broadband Internet

Delete Corrupt Folders and Initiate Fresh Installation

Movie Maker Install Error 0x80040705 Source D3DX10_42 appears due to corrupt folder contents. The destination folders may previously contain some older versions of the file or they are simply corrupted. Delete corrupt folders and initiate a fresh installation.

 

For Windows 8

  • Move your cursor at the extreme left corner of your Taskbar.
  • You’ll see Start Screen icon.
  • Right click it; select Control Panel from the context menu.
  • Click Programs | Programs and Features.
  • Right click Movie Maker from the list of installed programs. Select “Uninstall” option.
  • It is also possible that you may not find its entry if no old versions are present on your PC or due to failed installation as the case may be. Just continue following the steps.
  • Double click My Computer desktop icon.
  • Delete “Windows Live” sub folder from the following root folders:
    C:\Program Files
    C:\Program Files (x86)
    C:\Program Files\Common Files
    C:\Program Data\Microsoft
    C:\Users\\AppData\Local
    C:\Users\\AppData\Local\Microsoft

Note: Program Data folder is hidden by default. Unhide it through the steps given below:

  • Click View tab on the ribbon interface of Windows Explorer.
  • Check-up the box labelled “Hidden items”.
 

For Earlier Versions:

  • Opening Control Panel: (Replaces Step 1-3 of above paragraph)
    Click Start button, type “Control Panel” in the Search Box and press ENTER.
  • Showing Hidden Folders:
    Click the Tools menu, select Folder Options. Click the View tab, select “Show hidden files, folders and drives” option. Click OK button.
    All other steps remain the same.

Download D3DX10_42 File

As the error specifies there is a problem with D3DX10_42 file. Download the file from the Internet, move it to the appropriate directory and replace existing file. The existing file may be corrupt.

 

For Windows 8:

  • Download the file from web. (Download at your own risk. Downloading files from third party sites may be harmful. It is highly recommended to scan the downloaded file.)
  • Create a new folder “Temp” on your desktop.
  • Extract downloaded zip file contents in the Temp folder.
  • Select and move all files from the Temp folder to the following folders:
    C:\Windows\System32
    C:\Windows\SysWOW64 (For 64 bit versions)
  • Move your cursor at the extreme left side of your Taskbar.
  • You’ll get Start Screen icon. Right click it and select “Command Prompt (Admin)”.
  • Type the following commands-
    Regsvr32 d3dx10_42.dll
    Exit
  • Restart your system for the changes to take effects.
 

For Earlier Versions:

Opening Command Prompt as an Administrator: (Replaces Step 4-5 of the above paragraph)

  • Click the Start button.
  • Click All Programs | Accessories.
  • Right click Command Prompt, select Run as administrator.

All other steps remain the same.
