This article provides steps to diagnose error 7 Windows error 5 iTunes. The steps are compatible with Windows 8.1/ 8/ 7/ Vista.

Run iTunes Setup as Administrator

Exit and re-run the setup program as administrator. The setup program may display an error when it is opened without administrative privileges.

For Windows 8.1/ 8 and Earlier Versions:

  • Insert iTunes installation disc, if you’re using a CD media.
  • Double click Computer desktop icon.
  • Open the drive containing iTunes installation files.
  • Right click the setup program (usually, iTunesSetup.exe, iTunes64Setup.exe), and then select “Run as administrator” option.
  • Enter your administrator password, if any, and then click Yes to confirm.
 

Disable the User Account Control (UAC)

UAC stands for User Account Control, which is a security feature in Windows. You may encounter error 7 Windows error 5 iTunes due to conflicts between DEP and the iTunes installation. Turn off the DEP feature, and then re-run the installation.

 

For Windows 8.1/ 8:

  • Press Windows Key + X.
  • Click Search.
  • Type “Change user account control settings” in the Search Box.

  • Open it from the Search Results page.
  • In the new page you’ll find a slider. Move that slider to the extreme bottom, i.e. to Never Notify option.
  • Click the OK button to confirm.
  • Press Windows Key + C.

For Earlier Versions of Windows:

  • Click the Start button.
  • Type “Change user account control settings” in the Search Box.
  • Press ENTER, or just click it.

  • Click the Start button, arrow key, and select Restart option.
 

Remove Corrupt Files and Reinstall it

Error 7 Windows error 5 iTunes appears because of corrupted program files. Firstly, uninstall the program through the Control Panel. Remove the folder(s) left on your hard disk. Download the latest setup online and reinstall the program again.

 

For Windows 8.1/ 8:

  • Press Windows Key + X.
  • Click Programs and Features.
  • Right click and select Uninstall option for all the programs listed below:
    Apple Application Support
    Apple Mobile Device Support
    Apple Software Update
    Bonjour
    iTunes
  • Reboot your system for the uninstall procedure to finish.
  • Double click the Computer icon on your Desktop.
  • Delete the following folders one by one:
    C:\Program Files\iPod\
    C:\Program Files (x86)\iPod\
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\CoreFP
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\CoreFP
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Apple Application Support
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Apple Application Support
    C:\Program Files\Bonjour
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Bonjour
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support
    C:\Program Files\iTunes\
    C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes\
  • Reboot the system once again.
  • Download a fresh setup from the iTunes official website, and reinstall the program again.
 

For Earlier Versions of Windows:

  • Click the Start button.
  • Select Control Panel.
  • Press F3 key of your keyboard.
  • In the Search box on the top right corner, type “Uninstall a program”
  • Open it from the Search Results.
  • Refer Steps # 3-8 from Windows 8.1/ 8 user’s paragraph.
 

Modify the Hosts File

The Hosts file is used to store your network configurations. Modify the Hosts file as per the instructions given below. Error 7 Windows error 5 iTunes will not occur again.

 

For Windows 8.1/ 8:

  • Press Windows Key + C.
  • The Charms Bar will appear on right corner of the screen.
  • Click the Search icon.
  • Type “Notepad” in the Search Box.
  • Click the Apps icon.
  • Right click Notepad in to the Search Results, and then click the “Run as administrator” icon at the bottom of the screen.
  • Notepad will open as administrator.
  • Click the File menu, select Open.
  • Browse the following folder:
    C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\ETC\
  • Select HOSTS file, click Open button.
  • Notepad (Admin) will open the Hosts file.
  • Click the Edit menu, select Replace.
  • Type “74.208.105.171 gs.apple.com” (without quotes) in the “Find what” textbox.
  • Type “# 74.208.105.171 gs.apple.com” (without quotes) in the “Replace with” textbox.
  • Click the Replace button.
  • Click the File menu, and then select Save option.
  • Exit Notepad.
 

For Earlier Versions of Windows:

  • Click the Start button on your Taskbar.
  • Type “Notepad” in the Search Box.
  • Right click that into the Search Results.
  • Select “Run as administrator” option.

Use the TinyUmbrella and iOS Firmware

If you’re still encountering this error, use the TinyUmbrella and iOS Firmware to put the device into the DFU Mode/ Recovery Mode. The steps are outlined below:

For Windows 8.1/ 8 and Earlier Versions:

 
  • Download both TinyUmbrella and iOS Firmware.
  • Connect your iPhone to your computer using a USB cable.
  • Double click TinyUmbrella icon on your desktop.
  • Click the button named “Start TSS Server”.
  • Press and hold the Power & Home key simultaneously. Keep holding the same for around 15 seconds.
  • Now keep holding the Home key for additional 10 seconds, only release Power key.
  • Your iPhone will enter into the DFU Mode now. The screen will be black, and Apple logo will appear.
  • Press and hold the Shift key and then click on “Restore” as soon as you get the device has entered into recovery mode message. The key combination for Mac users is Alt key. The“Restore” button label remains the same.
  • Browse the IPSW that you downloaded.
 

Reinstall Microsoft .NET Framework

Uninstall and reinstall Microsoft .NET Framework software which is commonly used by different applications installed on your PC including iTunes.

 

For Windows 8.1/ 8:

  • Refer Steps # 1-2 from “Remove Corrupt Files and Reinstall it” paragraph.
  • Right click “Microsoft .NET Framework” program, select Uninstall.
  • Follow the uninstall wizard, reboot when you’re done.
  • Download a fresh setup from the Microsoft’s official website.
