Windows 8 Keeps Rebooting itself

This article provides troubleshooting information to get rid of frequent critical system problems which ultimately result in unexpected Windows 8 reboots.

Perform System Refresh

PC Refresh is the process of reinstalling operating system, installed programs, personal documents and files and removing program settings. It does not affect the inbuilt Windows programs and softwares.

 

This option is useful when your PC isn’t performing as well as it once did. If you’re using Windows 8.1 after upgrading from Windows 8, PC Refresh will restore the Windows 8 installation provided you have a recovery partition.

  • Press Windows Key + C.
  • The Charms Bar will be displayed.
  • Click Settings icon.
  • Click “Change PC Settings”.
  • Metro app will open showing all Control Panel items.
  • Click General tab.
  • Click “Get Started” button under “Refresh your PC without affecting your files” category.
 

Perform Clean Boot

Clean Boot is all about loading minimal number of services. It fully disables startups except basic drivers. Only Microsoft services are allowed to execute during boot interval. This may help identifying problem with particular startups or services, if any, failed to load properly. You won’t experience Windows 8 keeps rebooting itself problem again.

 
  • Press the Windows Key + X simultaneously.
  • Select Run.
  • Type “MSCONFIG” in the Open textbox.
  • Click OK button.
  • System Configuration tool will open.
  • Click the General tab.
  • Select “Selective startup” option.
  • Uncheck the box labelled “Load startup items”.
  • Make sure the checkbox named “Load system services” is checked-up.
  • Click Apply, and then OK.
  • Press Windows Key + X again.
  • Select Task Manager.
  • Click “More details” link.
  • Click the Startup tab.
  • Right click a startup application, select Disable. Do the same for all enabled startups.
  • Click the Services tab.
  • Right click a service you would like to terminate, and select Stop. Do the same for other services as well.
  • Exit Task Manager.
  • Restart your machine.
 

Perform System Memory Troubleshooting

The Windows Memory Diagnostic tool lets you identify problems with the computer memory. If any problems are detected, you may have to purchase a new RAM and install it.

  • Press Windows Key + C.
  • Click the Search icon.
  • Type “memory” in the Search Box.
  • Click the Settings icon.
  • Open “Diagnose your computer’s memory problems” under the Search Results.
  • Click “Restart now and check for problems” button.
  • The computer will restart and it’ll automatically conduct several memory tests.
